This is a real life story, so bear with me as I give some
background information.
We have a “free ad” section at our web site where people can
place a free ad for their business. Ads are submitted weekly and
published on the web. Now, to place an ad, someone has to visit
our web site and fill out a form containing their email address
and the copy of the ad. We try to make it as easy as possible,
but the bottom line is many people are not serious, and don’t
have a clue as to how to run a business on the web.
When the ads are received, we send an automatic response to the
person who sent it. Perhaps one out of ten has an incorrect
email address and the response is returned as undeliverable.
What a waste of time.
How do these people think that people can respond to their ad if
their email address is incorrect?
Going through our archives, I found some real gems - what do you
think about these offers?
“Join our MLM and earn beg income”. This is either a typo or
they are promising very little in the way of earnings. This
person obviously didn’t proof their copy before submitting the
ad.
Another ad promised huge earnings, but gave no contact
information. Not a web site URL or an email address to be found.
Guess they figure it is so powerful an offer, we will find them
- another waste of time.
“Make Money! Turn $10 into $40,000 CASH like I did” - but wait -
this guy is using a free email account. If he’s making all that
money, wouldn’t you think he could afford one for ten bucks a
month - maybe he is saving all those $10 bills so he can earn
$40,000 CASH with each one.
“You can make 500% Profit without investing any money” - need I
say more!
“Tired of the “Rat Race”? Free online training and no capitol
needed!” Did this guy mean “capital”? I’ll hang on every word he
has to say.
“Exciting,EasyandProfitable” - guess this person never learned
how to use that big bar on the bottom of the keyboard. I think
you see where this article is going.
If you are going to advertise a business on the web, and you
present less than a professional image - you’re not going to do
business. If you present yourself like the above examples, enjoy
your “walk on the quiet side”. Most people are not idiots, and
I’m sure the authors of the above ads are not either. But why
give that impression? I sure wouldn’t do business with any one
of them.
I read another ad for Web Design and the HTML coding in his ad
was wrong. That sure built a lot of confidence.
Most people scan poorly constructed ads and simply “click away”.
Guess they feel like I do. If you don’t care enough to write a
credible ad, why should I think you’ll care about me if I buy
from you?
Many people rely too heavily on the spell checker on their
computer. This is a mistake. After you do spell check, get
someone else to read it. When writing something, many times you
get so close to the article, you miss mistakes that someone else
would quickly find. Many words that are being used incorrectly
will pass spell check.
Remember - you usually only get one “shot” when a person sees
your ad. If it is well written, and has an attention getting
headline, you just might make that sale. If you want to do
business on the web, get serious or people will come to the
conclusion that you are someone who “Doesn’t Have a Clue” and
look elsewhere.

Match your message to your market
The first issue is how to match your financial seminar message to your target market. It’s a simple idea that many professionals skip, assuming they know their audience. For example, let’s assume you want to market a financial seminar to people age 60 and over. To develop a winning financial seminar invitation, you need to know how these people think. You cannot assume that your market thinks like you do. If you’re 40 years old, you probably want to know about opportunities to make money. But people over 60 (in most cases) are not motivated to make more money. They care about preserving capital and their biggest fear is losing principal (their “hot button”). So is it any wonder that your opportunity-oriented seminar titled, “How to Triple Your Money with Stocks,” doesn’t get much of a response?
What does your audience really want?
You could triple your attendance with the right financial seminar title, such as, “Six Ways Retirees Ruin Their Finances.” This financial seminar title appeals directly to their fear and will pull in the attendance (I have very successfully tested this title over a dozen times). Whichever target market you choose, you really need to know their most significant emotional concern. If you can title a financial seminar addressing that concern, you’re half the way home. If you’re not sure, don’t make any assumptions.
For example, do business owners care most about making a profit (which would be an easy assumption to make)? Or is their greatest concern having more free time with the family? Until you really know the answer, your marketing and your financial seminar cannot be very effective because you don’t know your market’s hot button. To learn what motivates your market, you need to speak with several members of your audience, one on one. Do some interviews and really listen and clear your mind of preconceived assumptions.
Once you know what motivates your audience (and you may have several items), list them. These will be the “bullet points” on your financial seminar invitation. Pick your strongest bullet point and this one will be your financial seminar title (you can test this by using a different bullet point as your title each time you hold a seminar and see which gets your best response).
State your bullet points as benefits, secrets or information to be revealed
My firm’s clients are financial professionals. Following are titles and bullet points I use in marketing materials to my prospects and you can use the same philosophy in marketing to your prospects:

It’s the bullet points that make you want to know more, to take action and attend the seminar. When you can do the same on your financial seminar invitations for your prospects, you will have a full audience.
Appeal to subgroups
Each bullet point captures a “sub group.” While all of your prospects should be from a qualified list (more about this in an article you can find on my web site), there are groups within the list who have distinct concerns.
For example, I deal with financial planners who get good seminar attendance, but do not close appointments. They would respond to the above bullet point, “How to close appointments right at the financial seminar.” Another sub group might be planners who get plenty of appointments, but do not have sufficient financial seminar attendance. They will respond most to the bullet point, “One small change in the invitation which boosts attendance by 25%.”
Therefore, the more relevant bullet points you have, the more sub groups you will capture, the larger your financial seminar attendance. In fact, if I send 3000 invitations for an investor seminar, I have calculated that each bullet point is responsible for six buying units in attendance.

The first business cards were actually playing cards and the
practice of exchanging such cards originated in the Court of
King Louis XIV of France. The “Sun King”, who incidentally was
the longest serving Monarch in history, held court in his
opulent Palace of Versailles situated in today’s terms, just a
short train ride from Paris.
The gentlemen of the Court were dedicated followers of fashion
and were many in number. King Louis, an astute politician,
realized that trouble could come from only one quarter and that
was from a disaffected aristocracy. To safeguard himself, he
brought all the nobility to Versailles where he gave them jobs,
a comfortable lifestyle and of course, money.
For the most part the nobles had not a lot to do as they sat
under the ever-watchful eye of the absolute Monarch. Playing
cards were one of the important “affairs” of state. The
gentlemen would use these playing cards to write promissory
notes to one another as a means of covering their gambling debts
until next pay day. From this practice arose a whole system of
writing notes, arranging meetings and dare I say, scheming
assignations with the ladies of the court.
Louis came to the throne as a mere child of 5 in 1643. Of course
the affairs of state were governed by the Prince Regent, so it
was after the establishment and the building of Versailles, in
the third quarter of the seventeenth century, that the practice
that gave rise to the business card came into being.
About the same time, across the Channel in England, and notably
the capital, London, a much more mundane albeit intensely
practical form of business card was on the rise. This was the
“Trade Card”. The purpose of this type of card was to direct
members of the public to a merchant’s place of commerce. The
cards invariably showed a map, clearly directing the potential
customer to the business premises. This was really important at
a time before properly designated street addresses had come into
being. The cards were printed using woodcut or letterpress and
were the traditional black on white. Colored varieties were to
come much later.
These early business cards were incredibly important, serving as
very powerful advertising tools in an era before the advent of
mass communications. The clarity of the map and associated
information could well decide the fate of a fledgling commercial
venture. Today, when somebody gives you a card you glance at it
and file it for future reference. You can use the information
printed there to telephone, write or e-mail the donor, but this
was not so in earlier times of course. The card’s original
purpose was to give you clear directions on how to reach the
business man in question.

Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) are a requirement in everyone’s diet, for both human and animal. However, the body cannot produce EFAs on its own, so it must be added to the diet each day. The two most commonly known fatty acids are omega 3 (linoleic acid) and omega 6 (alpha-linoleic acid). The diets of our pets, like people, tend to include more omega 6 fatty acids rather than omega 3. This is an imbalance that needs to be improved upon.
Omega 3 fatty acids are essential as they help with the proper formation of cell membranes, cardiovascular functions, nourish the lining of the digestive tract, and work to keep your pet’s skin and coat smooth, soft and shiny. Another essential function of omega 3 fatty acids is that they work to reduce inflammatory problems in the body. If you find your pet’s coat is dull and brittle or if he/she tends to have dry skin and scratch a lot, it may be due to a lack of this particular fatty acid.
There are different types of essential fatty acid supplements that are available, however which kind you choose to supplement your dog or cat’s diet can be a bit of a dilemma.
Pure plant oils such as flax oil, evening primrose oil, safflower oil or a blend of plant oils is a good alternative to fish omega-3 fats. These should be “cold-pressed” oils, as opposed to oils that are typically extracted with chemical solvents. The problem with plant oils is that animals have a harder time converting the fatty acids to a form best used by the animal’s system.
Fish oils, such as salmon oil, halibut liver oil, or cod liver oil are more easily converted and used by an animal’s body. The downside is that fish oils often contain deadly toxins, including high levels of dangerous PCBs, dioxins and detectable levels of mercury. Farmed salmon is the worst for contamination and contains less omega 3 acids than wild salmon. At present nearly 30% of all fish are farmed, with salmon being in the 90% farmed range. As well, farmed salmon are often carriers of disease and parasites. When supplementing your pet’s diet with fish oils, choose oils that come from wild sources, not farmed.
There are also blended fish and plant oil supplements available. These often include a mixture of salmon or cod liver oil and flax, safflower or other such oils that provide a mixture of 3 to 4 parts omega 3 oils to 1 part omega 6 oils. Giving your animal a combination fish/plant supplement may be a good alternative to consider, as they should contain fewer toxins since they are not strictly fish oils, yet still should be better assimilated by the animal’s body than straight plant oils.

The violence that paralyzed Sao Paulo from May 12 until May 19 revealed the raw power of the First Capital Command (P.C.C.), considered one of the most powerful organized criminal factions in Brazil. Prison riots that erupted in nearly 100 prisons led to over 150 murders, destroyed city buses, and terrorized millions of citizens, propelling Brazil onto the world stage. Yet a more deeply-rooted system run by the P.C.C. reveals how powerful this gang has become.
On May 10, just two days before the riots began, two members of the Sao Paulo Department of Investigation of Organized Crime, Godofredo Bittencourt Filho and Ruy Ferraz Fontes, testified before the Brazilian Government Inquiry Commission on the Traffic of Illegal Weapons about their understanding of the true power of the P.C.C.
Bittencourt and Ferraz testified that the P.C.C. is a very serious problem that is only growing. They blamed Sao Paulo authorities for separating and sending to other Brazilian states various leaders of the P.C.C. by pointing out that because of this separation, the P.C.C. now has a strong presence on a national level in Matto Grosso do Sul, Parana, Bahia, Rio Grande do Sul, and Brasilia.
According to Bittencourt and Ferraz, the P.C.C. controls over 140,000 prisoners in the state of Sao Paulo alone. Another 500,000 individuals support the organization outside the prison system. This group helps enforce some 100 cases of extortion organized by the P.C.C. on a daily basis, representing some 70 percent of kidnapping cases in Brazil’s financial capital of Sao Paulo.
Apart from a proven ability to organize simultaneous, widespread prison riots and destabilize public security, the organization has constructed a network of informants, lawyers, blue collar workers, gun and drug dealers, and bankers to do its bidding. This network is held together by a criminal financial system that finances education, facilitates crime and engages in killings. Bittencourt was quoted as saying, “to be [associated] with the P.C.C. is good business.”
Membership fees are the bread and butter of the P.C.C. For prisoners, a fee of 50 reales (US$25) is charged every month. Individuals on the outside pay a fee of 550 reales ($225). Given these fees and the high membership numbers both inside and outside the prison system, it is possible that the P.C.C. organization earns millions of dollars a month from fees alone.
Criminal finance is another revenue stream. If a group needs $10,000 to mount a bank robbery, they can go to the P.C.C. In this case, the P.C.C. acts as a black market bank to finance and facilitate criminal activities.
To distribute weapons, the P.C.C. uses Sedex, a Brazilian courier system known for reliability and timely delivery. Weapons as large as assault rifles have allegedly been delivered by Sedex to the waiting hands of criminals.
The P.C.C.’s weakest link is its legal team. Currently 18 lawyers serve the P.C.C. leadership, according to Bittencourt. They oversee dozens of legal cases against P.C.C. members and make regular visits to P.C.C. leaders imprisoned around the country. Brazilian law protects the lawyer-client relationship to extremes. Prison authorities are not allowed to search lawyers when they enter the prison to visit their clients. Many believe that the lawyers bring cell phones, two-way radios, laptops, and other critical tools the P.C.C. needs to keep its criminal system running.
Reaching beyond its current legal team, the P.C.C. supports law students, paying full tuition in exchange for services once they have a law degree. The P.C.C.’s educational funding extends to future politicians and other individuals who indicate an interest in entering Brazil’s political world. The group also facilitates the path for students who want to enter public security. These efforts and more act as a well-planned insurance policy to ensure the continued existence of the P.C.C. through the manipulation of Brazil’s judicial, political, and security systems.
It was the manipulation of Brazil’s political system that led to the purchase of the testimony Bittencourt and Ferraz prepared for their audience. For some $100, the PCC purchased the testimony from an employee of a company contracted to record and transcribe congressional hearings. The material was allegedly purchased by a P.C.C. lawyer, who delivered the information to the P.C.C. leadership.
Also documented in this material was Bittencourt’s decision to move on May 12 P.C.C. leaders to more secure prisons to prevent what they had learned would be widespread prison rioting on May 14. The P.C.C. once again proved their superior intelligence networks when they began the riots two days early, leading to a week long struggle to bring peace and rule of law back to Sao Paulo.
As a criminal enterprise, the P.C.C. took life inside a Sao Paulo prison in 1993 when prisoners grouped together to force the improvement of their living conditions. Since then, many prisoners, their family members, and other poor Brazilians idolize the P.C.C. as an armed faction of Brazil’s extreme left political flank, working to improve the rights and lives of impoverished Brazilians. For this reason, the P.C.C. draws many of its young recruits from the shantytowns surrounding Sao Paulo.
Many of the people in these communities believe the P.C.C. speaks for them when it fights against what they perceive as a deeply corrupt political organization, beleaguered by broken judicial and penitentiary systems that support an oppressive security structure.
A great irony is many Brazilians believe the P.C.C. fights for them against a government that they consider the true oppressor. At the same time, the P.C.C. has demonstrated a level of power that can only be achieved by taking advantage of the loopholes and cracks in various democratic institutions that today in Brazil appear to facilitate organized crime more than protect and serve Brazilian citizens. What happened in the second week of May 2006 is a minor showing of the true power the P.C.C. holds. It is a level of sophistication and organization that the international media have not been able to elucidate and that people in Brazil would rather not talk about.
