Things You Must Realize When Searching

Posted in Internet SEO Resources at 8:16 pm by admin

For the uninitiated, searching for web pages can seem a slow, obscure process. Unless you have a high-speed Internet connection, web pages may seem to take days to load. And the searching itself - you have to admit it looks weird typing in bunches of plus signs, asterisks, parenthesis, and other funny symbols and operators to find what you want.

To help you in this process and show that you are not, I’ve compiled a top five list of things you must realize when searching the web for information. No pencils will fly, no drums will roll, but you just might learn something.

5. Search Engines Have to Make Money

Before you grumble over the growing number of advertisements and sponsored links that appear in search engine results page, remember that most search engines are free. You’re not paying anything for a very costly service. Thus, these sites have to earn income somehow to stay afloat (computing power and bandwidth isn’t cheap!) So, to put it bluntly… live with it.

(Yes, I know some types of advertising are much more obtrusive than others. Popup ads, dancing animations, and other larger advertisements may make it harder to use some search engines that support these types of ads. If you don’t like it, vote with your mouse clicks and move to another search engine).

4. Sites Go Down

Worse yet, you’ve entered in your perfect search query, looked at the results page, and the first site you see no longer exists!

The Internet changes all the time. Unfortunately, search engines and directories are not able to constantly query every site on the Internet to see if they are still online. Occasionally (in other words, probably frequently) you will find links to web sites that no longer exist. It is just a part of life. Especially with the dot-com bust, many web site owners can no longer afford to host free resources. If they could not convert their traffic to paying customers, they just took their sites down

So when you find a link that is dead, don’t pump your fist in anger … just go back to the results page and move along. Or, better yet, if you’re using a search engine that caches pages, such as Google, just look at the cached version of the now defunct pages and find the information contained therein. It’s like stepping through a time machine!

3. Your Web Browser Will Crash

On a related note, not only do web sites go down - but so may your web browser. Sometimes it will be due to visiting a multimedia-intensive web site. Sometimes it will seem to happen for no reason. But it will happen, and when it does, don’t go blaming yourself saying that you did something wrong.

Web browsers, like just about any other type of computer software program available on the market, are not infallible. They can and usually do contain bugs. These may predictably rear their ugly heads when visiting sites containing a lot of multimedia and advanced interactive elements, or they may appear completely at random.

If your web browser crashes, do what I do. Just restart it. Don’t say you did something wrong. Don’t think that you must be so bad with computers that you crashed the Internet. Just restart your browser, and if you have to restart your computer to do so, then do it as well. Most likely the crash is not your fault.

2. The Internet Can Be Slow

No matter how fast your on-ramp to the Internet may be, there will be times where it seems to take forever to load a web page. This is just the nature of the beast.

As the Internet is a loosely connected network, if certain connections go down, computers may not always be able to route information via other networks. Thus access speed will suffer and your web browser will start to crawl. If this seems to be happening often, step away from the computer, go outside and take a nice, long walk (unless it’s 30 degrees below). You can run your search another time when the speed is back to normal.

And the #1 thing you must realize when searching…

1. The Best Result Just May Be On Page 10

Most people only look through the first page of search engine or directory results, usually the top ten listings. Others may visit the second page, but relatively very few people venture to the higher numbered pages.

This is a shame - sometimes the best results to a search engine query are not in the first ten listings as they may only contain links to commercially driven sites or sites run by web owners who know how to manipulate listings. In some cases web sites containing perfectly good information may not be listed in the top 10, 20, 50, or even top 100 results.

Obviously searching through the many pages and pages of resulting sites will take extra time, especially if you do not have a high-speed connection to the Internet. But, this time spent may well be worth it if you find some gems in the rough! So if you have the time, speed, and patience, browse through the deeper results pages. You never know what you may find!

And that’s it - my top five list of things you must realize when searching. This covers slow access time, results not on page 1, browser bugs, web sites popping up and down and changing management, and the need for sites to make money, causing advertisements to become more obtrusive. Gosh, that just makes you want to go out and search right now, doesn’t it? .

A Look at the Various Formats of Plasma TV Technology

Posted in Great Product Tips at 4:11 pm by admin

It is also important for those in the market for a plasma TV to be aware of other purchases that may be required besides the television itself. One of the most important things to keep in mind is the fact that in most cases these TVs will not come with their own tuner. The buyer of the television therefore needs to be prepared to provide a cable TV, satellite TV, DVD, VCR or computer input.

It is also important to purchase only the highest quality cables to connect these external devices to the plasma TV. These high quality televisions are very sensitive, and using the highest quality cabling will help owners get the most out of their new TVs.

The PAL Format

PAL is short for phase alternating line, and it is a color encoding system that is used to broadcast television signals in large portions of the world. The PAL form

The terminology PAL is generally used to refer to the 625 line/50Hz television system found primarily in European countries, and to differentiate the system form the 525 line/60Hz systems, known as NTSC, that have become the norm in North America, Central America and Japan. It is important for buyers of DVDs to understand this difference, since not all DVD players are capable of playing both formats.

PAL formats are used in a number of different countries throughout the world, including all of Europe, many parts of Asia, and many parts of Africa as well.

The NTSC Format

The NTSC format, on the other hand, is primarily used throughout Central and South America, including the United States, as well as in Japan. Again, it is important for both television shoppers and DVD purchasers to be aware of the differences between the competing PAL and NTSC formats, and to make sure they purchase the right products for their part of the world.

The term NTSC is an acronym for National Television System Committee, the industry wide standardization body that was responsible for the creation of the format.

The National Television System Committee was first established back in 1940 by the Federal Communications Committee (FCC) in order to resolve conflicts which had arisen over the introduction of a national analog television system in the United States. In March of 1941, the committee issued a technical standard for black and while television, built on an earlier recommendation by the Radio Manufacturers Association.

After a few years of inaction, the National Television System Committee came back into being in 1950, this time in order to make a decision about color TV. The committee unanimously approved what is now known as the NTSC color television standard in 1953.

Throughout the years there have been a number of changes in the NTSC standard, known as NTSC I, NTSC II and NTSC III. The specifics on each type of NTSC are as follows:

*NTSC I first became the standard in 1941, starting in the US and later moving to Canada. The NTSC I standard was the original black and white broadcasting standard.

*NTSC II is the color version of the NTSC standard.

*NTSC III was developed to deal with the new digital television revolution which began in the 1980s,and unlike NTSC all aspects of the NTSC III format have been rigidly designed.

The NTSC format is used throughout North America, including the United States, Canada and Mexico, as well as throughout Central America and the Caribbean, including Cuba, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Bermuda, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Panama among others. The NTSC format is also used extensively throughout South America, including Chile, Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela, as well as Japan and many other parts of Asia.

The SECAM Standard

The SECAM standard is commonly used throughout France, and in fact the acronym SECAM is short for sequential couleur avec memoire, or “sequential color with memory”. SECAM is an analog color TV system first used in France, and recognized as the first color television standard to be used in Europe.

Like PAL, NTSC and other color standards, SECAM is a compatible standard, meaning that those black and white television receivers that predate its adoption are still able to show the programs, although only in monochrome. This compatibility is achieved by adding a second signal to the basic black and white signal. This signal is designed to carry the color information to the television set.

The work on the SECAM standard began in 1956, and by the end of the 1950s the standard was in place. It was still too early, however for widespread introduction of the standard and the devices capable of playing its signals.

The first SECAM standard was introduced in France during the 1960s, but the color television was not an instant hit in France. A year after the final SECAM standard came online, only about 200,000 color sets had been sold, in contrast to the million that were expected.

In addition to France, the SECAM standard was eventually adopted by the former colonies of France and Belgium, as well as the countries of Eastern Europe, the Middle East and the Soviet Union. With the fall of the Soviet Union, however, came the introduction of competing standards, and many Eastern European countries have since made the switch to the PAL format.

With all these competing color television standards on the market, it is easy to understand why it can be so important to choose a plasma TV capable of playing several different formats. The advent of these multiformat capable plasma televisions has been one of the most important technological improvements in the world of electronics, and those in the market for a new television set or DVD player would do well to keep these standards in mind as they shop.

The Shield (Season 3) DVD Review

Posted in The Movie Way at 9:53 pm by admin

Nominated for 4 Emmys and 4 Golden Globes, including Best Television Series - Drama, The Shield is one of the top police dramas of the past decade. The brainchild of creator Shawn Ryan, writer for such hit shows as Nash Bridges (1996) and Angel (1999), The Shield made history in 2003 by becoming the first basic cable series to win a Golden Globe for Best Drama Series (in the past, only non-ad supported shows such as The Sopranos and Sex And The City have done so well). The hour-long drama boasts a strong, well-rounded cast who, along with the writers/producers, have managed to make The Shield the longest running series on the FX Network…

The Shield centers around an inner-city Los Angeles police precinct where the lines between right and wrong are often blurred. An ongoing power struggle between a group of corrupt, yet effective, cops and their new boss, Capt. David Aceveda (Benito Martinez), remains the focal point of the show. Det. Vic Mackey (Michael Chiklis, of The Commish) heads up an elite unit known as the Strike Team. An effective leader who bends the rules when they fit his aims, Mackey often butts heads with the by-the-book Aceveda who weighs his own political ambitions against the cost of bringing down Mackey and his associates. Veteran Det. Claudette Wyms (CCH Pounder, of ER) knows the ropes, admires Mackey, but also knows how to play sides of the game. For the 2005 season, Glenn Close - star of such films as The Natural (1984), Fatal Attraction (1987), and Air Force One (1997) - joined the cast as Capt. Monica Rawling. Together, this celebrated cast maintains an internal tension among themselves while carrying out a unified fight against the criminal element - a fight that keeps the streets of L.A. safe…

The Shield (Season 3) DVD features a number of exciting episodes including the season premiere “Playing Tight” in which the Strike Team’s efforts to end their corruption are put to an end when they discover that two gangs are attempting to acquire more deadly weaponry. Meanwhile, Dutch and Claudette investigate the murders of four men by the Armenian mob… Other notable episodes from Season 3 include “Safe” in which Mackey and the Strike Team go to great lengths to keep themselves from being linked to the money train heist, and “All In” in which the Strike Team anxiously sweeps the streets for a purported Armenian hit-man before he gets to them first…

Top 2 Ways To Get Higher Rankings in Major Search Engines

Posted in Internet SEO Resources at 11:54 am by admin

Top 10 search engine rankings. Everybody wants it but a few achieve it. Search engines have always been an important source of traffic for many marketers. Achieving high search engine rankings should be one of your goals because it can be profitable in the long run.

But what is it that prevent some people from obtaining their coveted rankings?

It’s true that some years ago, getting high rankings was very easy. You could just set up a site, heavily optimize it on the page itself and bam, you can appear in the top listings quickly and easily.

Nowadays, this has totally changed. It is becoming more and more difficult to secure and even maintain good rankings on the major search engine result pages(SERPs) like Google and Yahoo. Some of the reasons are:

(1) Competition

There is more and more competition. More and more websites are popping out everyday and everyone is trying to promote their websites, hence increasing pages and websites in the SERPs. An example, Google has more than 8 billion pages now in its index.

(2) Search Engine Algorithm Change

With the search engine algorithm changing, it can become more complex to figure out how to get top rankings or maintain your existing ones.

(3) Search Engines Are More Severe

Doing any foolish mistake with your site can be costly. You should be careful what you are doing when promoting your site. For eg, you can have hidden text or links on your site without you knowing and you can be penalized.

If it’s not a mistake, you could be linking to websites that aren’t good anymore, hence devaluing your site.

What should you do? Well, you can’t do anything about competition neither algorithm change but you need to monitor who you link to and ensure that your site is clean everytime. And above all,
links on as many similar and related sites are still highly valuable to get top rankings and you should constantly get them regularly because that’s the core building block of good placement in the SERPs no matter what and to outrank your competition, that’s what you should do. And you can be sure that good quality links will still be important in every algorithm change.

Here are top 2 ways to get links to your site and higher rankings in major search engines:

(1) Reciprocal Links

It’s being said that reciprocal links are decreasing in value but still though, they are worth getting. If you are exchanging links with sites which are of similar or related topics, it can do you more good than harm. So don’t stop getting these type of links. A link is a link and it will benefit you in many ways you can imagine. A link will not only help you in better search engine placement but you will get traffic from that link alone.

I know that because I get lots of traffic from my link partners alone. If you can get one on the homepage, it’s even better. So don’t underestimate reciprocal linking. They still work. Many sites with high search engine positioning have reciprocal links to them, so they are still of great value. The web is simply a network of websites linking to each other in a way. Links are what form the internet.

(2) One-way Links

On the other hand, one-way links are best because they are independent votes. Other websites link to you without linking back. Well these type of links are harder to get.

Some good ways to get them are:

(i) Build a useful site and allow others to link to you freely by providing them with the necessary materials like text links or banners. Text links are better because you can include your targeted keywords in them. Some people will even link to you just because your site has good content and will find a way to link to you usually just by taking your homepage title. I’ve seen that.

(ii) Buy some text advertising on other quality related sites. This will give you traffic and automatically benefit you in your rankings.

(iii) Write articles of interest to your audience and submit them to other websites which accept articles. In your author bylines, you have a link to your site. Well this will certainly help your traffic, link popularity and rankings. But to boost your rankings better, check out section (iv) which reveals how use the article marketing strategy to get one-way inbound links with your targeted keyword in your anchor text.

(iv) Create a section on your site allowing others to re-publish your articles. Provide them with the exact html code so that they can just copy and paste that code on their sites easily. Don’t forget to mention that the article and author bio should not be modified in any way if it’s used. Hence by facilitating their tasks, you can be sure to get your articles distributed on the web much more faster.

In your author bylines, be sure to put an anchor text with your targeted keyword in the link to your site. This is how an author bylines can be extremely beneficial for your rankings. This is not just a url but a keyword targeted url. Imagine your reprint article page gets decent traffic, you increase your chances to get some people interested to re-publish your work on the net. With time, you will boost your link popularity and get higher rankings.

Well you work hard to produce quality content and it can pay itself many times over. One article can be published on hundreds of websites and if your url is automatically coded with an anchor text containing your targeted keyword, you will have 100 one-way keyword-rich inbound links. Now what’s the value of that? I let you figure it out.

Getting high search engine rankings takes time, work and patience but if you are serious about your business and you are here to stay for long, you should devote some of your time everyday doing some search engine promotion. In the long run, you are going to reap the rewards of your on-going work.

Ten Steps To A Well Optimized Website - Step Seven - Website Submissions

Posted in Internet SEO Resources at 11:20 am by admin

Welcome to part seven in this ten-part search engine positioning series. Last week we discussed the importance of human testing. In part seven we will cover the best practices of website submissions, where to submit your website to, and how to do so.

With services offering to help you get more traffic and higher search engine positioning by submitting your website to “18 Bazillion Search Engines For Just $19.95 Per Month!” and other such claims, there has grown much confusion around website submissions. In this article we will clear up many of the misconceptions around submitting your website and may even save you “Just $19.95 Per Month!” in the process.

Over this series we will cover the ten key aspects to a solid search engine positioning campaign.

The Ten Steps We Will Go Through Are:

1. Keyword Selection
(http://www.beanstalk-inc.com/articles/search-engine-positioning/keywords.htm)

2. Content Creation
(http://www.beanstalk-inc.com/articles/search-engine-positioning/content.htm)

3. Site Structure
(http://www.beanstalk-inc.com/articles/search-engine-positioning/structure.htm)

4. Optimization
(http://www.beanstalk-inc.com/articles/search-engine-positioning/optimization.htm)

5. Internal Linking
(http://www.beanstalk-inc.com/articles/search-engine-positioning/internal-linking.htm)

6. Human Testing
(http://www.beanstalk-inc.com/articles/search-engine-positioning/human-testing.htm)

7. Submissions

8. Link Building

9. Monitoring

10. The Extras

Step Seven - Website Submissions

While there are definitely more critical areas of the website optimization process there is perhaps no area subject to as much misinformation and to such a vast audience. Here are some common misconceptions that are often believed about search engine submissions:

1. You need to submit your website often to keep it indexed by the search engines

2. You need to submit your website to thousands and thousands of search engines to get decent traffic

3. Submitting your website often will keep you at the top of the search engine rankings

These beliefs are all incorrect and those who can make a quick buck selling this disservice perpetrate them. If you have not recently received an email offering to “Submit Your Website To More Search Engines Than There Are Websites On The Internet For Just $19.95 Per Month!” then I can pretty much guarantee that you will in the not-too-distant future if your email can be found somewhere on your website.

An irony of this can be found in Google’s webmaster area where they note:

Amazingly, we get these spam emails too:

“Dear google.com,

I visited your website and noticed that you are not listed in most of the major search engines and directories…”

Reserve the same skepticism for unsolicited email about search engines as you do for “burn fat at night” diet pills or requests to help transfer funds from deposed dictators.

Good advice as I’m sure Google has their website submissions taken care of. Just because you receive such an email, doesn’t mean that you’re missing out on anything. Let’s first look at a breakdown of which engines are responsible for which traffic.

According to research the major search engines are responsible for the following percentages of traffic as of June 2004:

Google - 41.6%
Yahoo - 31.5%
MSN - 27.4% (MSN draws their results from Yahoo!/Overture)
AOL - 13.6% (AOL draws their results from Google)
Ask Jeeves - 7.0%
Lycos - 3.7%
Netscape - 3.0% (Netscape draws their results from Google)
AltaVista - 2.7% (AltaVista draws the Yahoo!/Overture)

Source: Neilson/Netratings (http://www.nielsen-netratings.com/)
Note: These numbers total over 100% as people may use multiple search engines if they don’t find the information they are looking for at the first one they try.

So what does this tell us? This tells us that the very vast majority of search engine traffic does not come from many thousands of search engines but rather, relatively few. This would lead to the obvious questions, “Is it worth paying to be submitted to thousands of search engines?” The real answer, “No.”

Then How Do I Submit My Own Website?

Automated search engine submission systems simply access the existing and readily accessible “Add URL” pages of the search engines and automatically submit your site. You can do this yourself simply by visiting the search engines and submitting through these same pages.

To simplify this process you can visit the “search engines” page on the Beanstalk Search Engine Positioning website (http://www.beanstalk-inc.com/info/search-engines-major.htm) where we link directly to the submissions pages of the major engines.

But What About The Other Engines? Surely They Provide Some Traffic?

Quite honestly, they may. You may get a visitor or two. Is it worth $19.95/mth or some such amount? No. You can get a better dollar/visitor ratio on any of the many PPC engines out there.

An additional point to note is that you may want to actually visit some of the lists of engines on the sites offering these services to you. You will discover a couple of important facts:

- Many of these so-called “search engines” are not engines at all but rather FFA (Free-For-All) pages and classified ads sites. They will not help your rankings, you will not see traffic from them and your listing will probably last about as long as spam in your Inbox.

- Many of the actual search engines and directories are topical. What this means is that they are focused on a single area and unless your site coincidentally is about space exploration, topographical mapping, etc. you won’t get listed. Submitting should not be confused with “guaranteed listing”. Submitting your site to thousands of engines is not the same as getting your website indexed on thousands of engines.

The Submission Myth

The truth of that matter is, submitting your website at all can realistically be considered a waste of time. Aside from a few key general directories (DMOZ, Yahoo, etc.) and a number of SEO directories, we did not submit the website www.beanstalk-inc.com to any of the major search engines. It’s true, not a single submission.

Are we indexed? Yes we are.

How did we get indexed without submitting our site? If you take the time that you would be spending submitting your site and spend it instead finding quality inbound links (which we will write about next week) your site will be indexed and much quicker than you think.

You’ve probably heard the term “search engine spider”. Search engines crawl websites. This means that they visit a page, follow all the links on that page and so on. If you have a link on a website that is already known to the search engines it is only a matter of time before your website will be found by default. If fact, when the Beanstalk site went live and the first link was established to it, it did not take the weeks that are estimated through the use of the submissions pages for our site to be found. The homepage of beanstalk-inc.com was index by Google three days after the site went live and the other major engines followed within a week or so.

Final Notes

If there are any points that I hope you take away from this article they are the following:

1. Automated search engine submissions services are not worth the money they charge.

2. You do not need to be submitted to thousands of “search engines”. The vast majority of traffic comes from the top few.

3. You will want to consider whether it is even worth the time to submit to search engines or whether that time could be better spent building quality, relevant links to your site and submitting your site to the major and topical directories.

An additional failing to the automated submissions systems not covered above is their inability to take into consideration the exact characteristics of your website for their directory submissions. When you’re submitting your website to directories you will have to choose the exact category your site falls into. Most directories have slightly different category hierarchies and the more exact you are in your submission, the higher the chance you will be listed. Automated systems can never be as exact across multiple directories as a human can.

Submitting your website, even correctly, will not guarantee you top rankings however it will leave you with money in your pocket to spend on other promotional endeavors that may actually produce a solid ROI. And THAT’S what it’s all about.

The rankings? You’ll have to read the other nine steps of the series to find out how to attain those.

Next Week

In part eight of this search engine positioning series we will cover the importance of link building, how to attain high quality, relevant links to your website, and the tools to reduce the time it take to do so significantly. With the importance of inbound links to your overall rankings you won’t want to miss this very important step in the website optimization process.

The Attitude Of “beforehand” Planning And Failure Acceptance

Posted in Uncategorized at 8:59 pm by admin

If you search, then you’ll never find a quality time if at the first place you have wasted it. Too much things to do is not an excuse to skip “important” things from the etceteras: assignments over gimmicks, cough drops over R.H. (You know what I mean), jotting down notes during class discussions over the falling-in-line-at-the-photocopying-station dilemma, and saving the spare allowance over “Ma, I need cash “kuno”… and fast!”

College peoples like Engineering students (whom we know do lots of things than ordinary), should learn how to sketch their things-to-do list prior to dues. It is very impossible if one Engineering student cannot encounter such time when he/she runs out of good ideas and ended up crying at the top of bed still with the shoes on. There are times when we cannot enjoy eight hours sleep over projects and requirements, plus friends telling you, “Hindi kasya ang books ko dito sa bag ko. Pwede pa-extra ng eyebags mo?” Still, we keep saying to ourselves that we’re used to it. Or is it that, you haven’t done your chores earlier or weeks before cut-off dates? It’s very frustrating but almost all Engineers-to-be are that.

The end point of such mind-set is… tadahh! Failure. But there are some who winded up doing well, but make sure your 75-passing grade is 70 yours and 5 others, not the vise versa (you’re nothing but a second rate trying hard copy cat!)

Failure, according to Reverend W.A. Nance, can be divided into those who thought and never did and into those who did and never thought.

As for me, it has been my routine to carry with me my Organizer on my bag. It occasionally feels very tiring for another carriage inside my bag in spite of my other books for Electronics and my two mobile phones everyday, but it is a relief not forgetting some things to be attended to for a day: club meetings, SPECTRUM deadlines, appointments with your instructor and others. Post-its are quite a good scheme, too. Sticking them at the monitor of your PC, or pinning them on your corkboards at home, or attaching them on the fridge door and scanning important notes before going to school. Mobile phone alarms may do (as long as you don’t forget to say excuse to your teacher when your beeper rings in the middle of the class).

Plan!

Don’t be so reluctant of remembering things, small “but important” things. Never let your classmates name you “tanga-tanga.” If you want them not to call you that, be not one. Try to do things “plantsado” before you go to bed. You must avoid looking petrified the next day from your forgetting to bring the report papers. Or you overlooked your notes for tomorrow’s quiz because you have an exchange with watching your favorite teleserye watching Kristine Hermosa with her bangs “na abot sa langit ka bag.” No! Prioritize your priorities first. Go over your planner so you won’t forget things for tomorrow. It’s simple.

Be a good thinker and a doer.

Someone once told me that the world has two kinds of people: thinkers and doers. They then said, “the thinkers need to do more, and the doers need to think more.” I have always tried to do both—reflect and act. When I have combined the two, I have reduced the odds of failure.

I’ve been dealing with three school papers this year: BITWISE, which I am the editor-in-chief, TCI and SPECTRUM where I both work as the Literary editor. To add, the ROOTS that is the Literary Folio of TCI and I am working on it as the editor. It’s very hectic though and it’s not a joke. But the key of doing the work well is enjoying the work. Plot dates for each task and make sure you perform each, even at partial. I have many deadlines to attend especially this year when we’re having our Design Exhibits on February 24-26 at SM Davao. It has been every other day that I attend with my group doing follow-ups and editing, and re-editing the documentations and going home 3 o’clock in the morning and having a first period class by 8:30am. I only got 4 hours sleep and I end up 10 to 15 minutes late and haven’t eaten breakfast.

Expect that kinds of things to happen and the better way to cope up is to adjust and don’t be shy asking your classmates on the things you’ve missed. Kita kita lang man sab magtinabangay, ‘diba? Then, when Friday comes, invite friends to have dinner with you at Win-An or treat yourselves with Lumi and Coke or Iced tea at Chery’s. Chip in lang gud mo. Make it a “friendly” habit.

During weekends, if you long to watch a movie at the mall, go and watch. If you want to go window-shop, you do so. Just don’t spend too much (have it in mind that there’s tomorrow and you might need cash for your amot-amot for the project). Leave a little money on your wallet and don’t expect you parents to always give you allowance on the time you wanted. You might end up sliding your cash cards in the ATM and found out your account’s empty and you start swearing you mother or your father of not giving you allowance. Wipe away the attitude of the excuse, “Ma! Pa! Daghan man gyud mi gastuson sa skwelahan. Kamo daw mag Engineering lalim ba.” And you have the guts… Don’t wait that your parents will answer you back, “Ibta sa na imong uban unya kung pwede ba na ma prenda.” If you ask finances to your parents (especially those who stay in boarding houses), inform them beforehand, so that they may too, can plan. Dili basta-basta ang kwarta karon mga indoy, mga inday. 12% na baya ang VAT karon. Just kidding, but true.

Now, if you’re graduating, don’t be so overjoyed “sa humot sa toga”, that you are trying to forget about paper works, assignments and deadlines. There’re still paper works, assignments, and deadlines and terror bosses. Don’t carry your attitude of not planning beforehand. You might come to your cubicle the next day your things are already inside the please-leave boxes and your boss’s lips curling from rage and even at 50 meters you could read his lips saying, “You’re Fired!” Don’t make yourself look so pitiful and you wishing, “Lupa, lamunin mo ako!”

Take the challenge. Light the fire of eagerness and willingness. Be not so “kumpyansa” about everything. Accept constructive criticisms and opinions. Recognize failures, and make them your teaching experiences. Do the best you can. Learn to plan. Plan earlier. Learn that, the easiest way to failure, according to Bill Cosby, is to please everyone. The best way to success is not just to please everyone, but also to exhaust all means. Alamin mo kung ano ang tama (parang RH kumbag).

Lastly, the best way to find for a helping hand is to look at the end of your arm. It’s so simple. Try to do early planning after you read this article. It’s not that complicated though.

Posted in Great Product Tips at 7:27 pm by admin

If one is to step back from the daily grind a bit one sees things that are not the way they should be. It doesn’t take long to see negative things out there that we wish were not so. Do you want to fix the world? Do you want to have those potholes in the road fixed? Do you think we should be using better materials for the roads? Do you think the country is becoming divided and that bothers you? Would you like to fix it?

Have you seen the pictures and heard of the problems of children around the world be sold as sex slaves, not having enough food to eat and dying of things like Malaria and AIDS? Have you ever said to yourself; “I want to fix the world” and simply not known where to start or what to do? Knowing that you would gladly volunteer what little time you have to the cause, but also know that you have your own local obligations as well to deal with, perhaps a job, family and so on? Not to mention taking care of yourself, as if you fail there, well you know you cannot do any good for anyone else anyway.

Standardized Tests & How To Beat Them

Posted in Uncategorized at 9:33 pm by admin

Study, Study, Study

The worst thing you can do before a standardized test is not study. There aren’t many people who can just waltz into the testing room and ace one without any test preparation. You have to buckle down, take those practice tests, and most of all LEARN from your mistakes on them!

Speaking of Practice Tests

Get some, and use them. These will probably be the most valuable things you can get your hands on besides the test answers themselves. (Not to mention practice tests aren’t illegal… stealing the answers is) First, get yourself at least three different copies of the practice tests, and for the first test, take as long as you want, and work through each question. No stress. Then for the second practice test, time yourself. Still don’t worry about how long it takes you, but be aware of what types of questions take you the longest. Next, time yourself again, but don’t go very much over the time limit. Maybe 5 minutes max. Again, pay attention to what types of questions you’re taking the most time on. Finally, on the last practice test or two, time yourself and stick to it. Don’t go over the time limit. While you’re taking the test, make sure you remember which types of questions gave you trouble, and if you can’t answer one of those right off the bat, move on then come back to it if you have time. There is no use missing a couple of “easy” questions because you spent too much time on one you couldn’t figure out. You can always come back for a hard one, but you can’t get the easy ones you didn’t answer back after the time limit.

REMEMBER THIS!

Hopefully that headline will help you remember this during your test preparation, as well as when you actually take the test. ALWAYS read the directions - for every test, every section, every question. If there are directions there, read them. Period. If you don’t read the directions, you may answer incorrectly or spend too much time trying to figure out a question that you shouldn’t have had a hard time with if you had read the directions. I cannot stress this enough - READ the directions!

Be Well Rested

The worst thing you can do is pull an “all-nighter” the night before a big test. It is almost guaranteed to ruin your test preparation. Think about it - taking a test is stressful, and your body can only take so much stress before you have to sleep it off. If you don’t sleep (or don’t sleep much) the night before a big standardized test, chances are the stress of the test will take its toll on your body, and your brain will begin to react more slowly. You will miss things you should have otherwise noticed, miss questions you should have known, etc. You can’t afford to do this on a standardized test.

Along that same note, show up to the test site early. That way, if you forget something, you’ve got time to go get it. That will help reduce your stress level, and thus, help increase your score. Again, too much stress will ruin all of the test preparation you’ve done.

Remember What You Learned From The Practice Tests

Remember when I said that you should pay attention to the types of questions you stumble over during your test preparation? Remember that when you’re taking the test. If you’re getting stuck on a question, skip it and come back. Just like you did during the practice tests. You’re better off trying to come back if you have time left over than you are wasting time on a question you might get wrong anyway. Go do the questions you can answer quickly! And if you’ve got time left over after you’ve answered all of the questions, go back and re-read them all and make sure your answers are right. At this point, you can afford to wrestle with an quetion that you stumbled over. However, remember this - your first instinct is usually the best one. Don’t talk yourself out of an answer you know is right.

Don’t Worry

Standardized tests aren’t the be-all end-all. There are plenty of people out there who didn’t do well on standardized tests at all, and they’re doing quite well for themselves. It’s not the end of the world if you don’t get a good score, just do some more test preparation and give it another try!
