Health and Safety Continues to Be Priority Even During Recession
A recent survey by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has revealed a heartening emphasis of different companies on health and safety even during the financial downturn that forced cutbacks in many areas of business.
Employees who have been questioned during the survey feel that the focus on health and safety has not lagged during the downturn. The survey covered about 1,260 professionals to arrive at the conclusions. Of the respondents, 85% of senior level employees from the construction industry said that recession has not brought cutbacks in their companies in these areas. A huge 70% of the professionals surveyed think that health and safety are seriously viewed in their organisation but a quarter does not feel that they are top priority for the management.
About a third also said that their organizations have actually increased spending on health and safety during the last one-year period. This includes spending on training sessions. However, about 13% of the respondents felt that spending has gone down during the same period. Most of those surveyed felt that awareness levels must be raised among employees and regular training sessions must be organised to keep workplace injuries at a minimum level.
The respondents also said that much more participation by HSE would help formulate adequate safety measures and norms in companies. HSE regulation was not considered excessive by about half the respondents. A quarter even thought that as far as health and safety is concerned, no amount of regulation can be termed excessive.
