Vodafone Re-launches Sure Signal Booster

Posted in Consumer Kicks, Life Of Technology, Telecommunication Hall at 5:49 am by admin

Vodafone has announced that it can completely eliminate the problem of weak broadband and phone coverage through its latest product- the Sure Signal box. This device improves the coverage by boosting the signal to bring better mobile broadband and phone connections.

Femtocell technology powers the Sure Signal box which looks like a small phone antenna and integrates with home broadband to provide 3G access within a limited region like in your home. A similar signal booster product was tested last year under the name Vodafone Access Gateway. The company is now giving it a second lease of life. The trial conducted earlier was not wholly successful, major drawbacks being its high price tag of £160 and poor performance.

However, Vodafone is confident that all the problems they had faced earlier with this femtocell technology product have been taken care of with the new version which is being launched under the name Sure Signal. It has brought down the price of the product to £50 and is assuring guaranteed results to attract customers.

The chief executive of Vodafone, Britain, Guy Laurence has stated that the consumers who have used the Sure Signal box now have claimed that the device has made a huge difference to their mobile broadband connections. Laurence has underlined the huge advantage that this product can bring those who work out of basements or homes by boosting the network signals in their vicinity.

While this may be true for people who face chronically bad connectivity or persistent network problems, those with fairly reliable connections will still hesitate to pay up for the device, it is believed. Given this, the demand for Sure Signal may be subdued.

BPI Accuses BT of Showing Leniency towards Illegal Downloaders

Posted in Better Net, Sounds, Telecommunication Hall at 3:59 am by admin

Given the fact that illegal file sharing in the cyber world is widespread today, the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) categorically stated that it is the responsibility of all service providers to ensure that their service is not being used for any illegal activity, and to punish such wrong actions. This comment comes as a response to the recent findings that revealed British Telecom’s lackadaisical approach towards illegal downloading and file sharing.

According to recent information obtained with regard to internet usage that involves gathering the IP addresses of users engaged in unlawful downloading, service provider BT is allowing nearly 100,000 users to download files illegally using its network and is doing nothing to stop the practice. Geoff Taylor, chief executive of BPI, stated that by allowing so many users to freely misuse the internet for illegal downloads, BT is indirectly encouraging the breaking of rules instead of showing commitment towards upholding the rules.

When contacted, a BT spokesperson clarified that the allegations were not true as not all peer-to-peer applications were used for illegal activity, especially given the fact that people often use such applications for playing online games like World of Warcraft. Moreover, he warned that tracking such illegal downloads would be seen as infringement on the privacy of the users.

While explaining Your Money Government, a BT spokesperson has stated recently that the cost of checking online piracy would mean an additional £24 every year being billed to the customer.

Lord Carter May Exit Government after Digital Britain Report

Posted in Consumer Kicks, Life Of Technology, Telecommunication Hall at 12:09 am by admin

Though he is currently the focus of media attention due to the imminent publication of the Digital Britain report, Lord Carter appears to be occupied elsewhere.

Reports indicate that the Communications Minister, who currently commands the implementation of the UK government’s policy to advance national communications and technology infrastructure, is considering stepping down from his post upon the publication of the much-hyped Digital Britain report, which is part of a contentious political programme. The Times, states that he may shift to the private sector, filling the post of ITV head, or may even transfer to Brussels.

However, the man responsible for straightening out broadband wireless infrastructure in the UK and for bringing the country’s media under control is having none of this. In an interview with the Times, he said that his focus is entirely on the Digital Britain report, on which he is hard at work. He dismissed any idea that he may move to a job outside the government, making it clear that he will stick around in the same capacity after the report is published, facilitating the fielding of questions and criticisms of the report. Thus, concerns that the ‘project manager’ will not be present to respond to public reaction of the report are unfounded.

Within a week’s time, the proposals Lord Carter has in mind for the UK would be revealed, and his suggestions for the improvement of access to broadband internet and for dealing with online piracy will be made public.

Virgin Media Survey Shows Lack of Technology Awareness in Britain

Posted in Consumer Kicks, Life Of Technology, Telecommunication Hall at 10:50 am by admin

The dismal state of technological knowledge of the British was evident in a recent survey conducted by Virgin Media among 3000 internet users.

The study suggests that the British are confused regarding this critical technology that they use everyday and the ignorance level is high enough to leave the authorities worried. Around 7-8% of the respondents considered Blu-Ray to be a type of internet connection. 53% said that they were unaware of the speed of their internet connection, indicating that probably they do not even know the terms at which the services are being provided and the download limits. They may not have much knowledge about internet security either.

The survey goes on to show that around 15% of the users believe that if their connecting cables are tangled or knotted, their internet can be slower. Approximately 50% of them seem to think that they need a phone line if they want to get an internet connection. This is an example of complete unawareness of the new mobile broadband technology and the existence of a ‘dongle’ (more info on dongles). This fact will not only irk Virgin Media and other mobile broadband providers, but also the government, with all the talk about mobile broadband playing a key role in Digital Britain.

These findings clearly show the poor state of knowledge regarding the internet. Virgin Media is proposing to spread knowledge about these technologies by establishing schools for the purpose. Three places that faired the worst in the survey- Birmingham, Belfast and Leeds, could be the first ones to get these schools. The head of Virgin Media, Richard Branson, also recognised the need for spreading knowledge while stating that he is also not as technologically updated as he should be and might need to join one of these broadband schools.

Digital Britain Making Steady Progress

Posted in Consumer Kicks, Life Of Technology, Telecommunication Hall at 8:26 am by admin

Talking about the interim report on the Digital Britain plan, and responding to queries from the MPs, the Communications Minister, Lord Carter said that the BBC could possibly help in the plan’s successful execution. He mentioned that approximately 20 percent of the media’s content is being consumed through the broadband internet in the country, and keeping this in mind, the state-funded media provider could have a role to play in realizing the government’s Digital Britian vision.

The report is aimed at planning Britain’s approach for the development of the next generation of digital communications in the country. Carter suggested that one of the ways of achieving the goals of this plan would be ensuring the availability of a 2MB connection to everyone across the country. He also offered a three-phase strategy to achieve this.

The first phase would involve raising the broadband speed benchmark from 56KB to 2MB, in the European law for broadband provision. The second phase would involve planning of technical infrastructure on which the faster connections will be established. The third phase would be to make available proper funds for the upgrade, which Carter mentioned could only be possible when both the private, as well as the public sector would agree to work jointly.

Portable Computers — Concept to Reality

Posted in Life Of Technology, Telecommunication Hall, University of Selling at 11:56 am by admin

A former computer games designer, Steve Jobs introduced the concept of computer portability in an age where computers had to be stacked inside stockrooms. However, his initial plan was to go soul-searching in India after his stint with Atari. Establishing a company that would become a worldwide phenomenon wasn’t on his list.

Born on February 24, 1955, Jobs is the adoptive son of Paul and Clara Jobs. His biological sister, Mona Simpson, is a famous novelist. After his backpacking trip to India, Jobs worked again for Atari with friend and future co-founder Steve Wozniak. This time though, he was tasked to create circuit boards for the game Breakout. Although Jobs was not familiar with circuit boards, he was able to impress Atari’s management through the help of Wozniak. Actually, it was Wozniak who did the job after Jobs offered to split the profit equally between them.

However, both men’s rise in the computer industry started at Job’s home garage. It was where the two assembled computers. Their first computer, which they both named Apple 1, was an instant success. The computer store The Byte Shop purchased 50 models. Although the Apple 1 was very crude, it was nevertheless the best model of a personal portable computer at the time. The earnings they made on Apple 1 were used to develop another computer model, Apple II.

Apple II was Job’s ticket in forming the Apple Company. At first several persons refused to lend him the money needed to create Apple II but Jobs eventually found a benefactor in Mike Markkula. Mike co-signed a bank loan with Jobs worth $250,000. With the money, the two Steve’s and Mike formed the Apple Computer Company on April 1, 1976.

A Great Way of Making Cheap Calls to Australia

Posted in Telecommunication Hall at 6:47 am by admin

I emigrated to England from Australiaabout four years ago, and up until recently had been using call cards to ring home and find out what people are up to. I don’t know why it is always me whose the last person to get to grips with new technology! I thought that using VoIP would require more technical knowledge than it actually does, I was shocked at how simple it was - and not least how cheap and convenient it is as well.

As well as being able to make cheap calls to Australia using VoIP, I can also make cheap calls from my mobile now using a small application I have downloaded and installed (as long as wi-fi is available). With all these great options for making cheaper phone calls overseas I really cannot understand why people would be messing around with phone cards, or swapping their SIM cards over to make an in international phone call anymore.

I love the ability to make calls back home to catch up with people without having to worry about the cost, or watch the clock. I only wish that I had realised how simple VoIP was to use when I first moved over as it would have saved me a lot of time money and effort. My next challenge is to get my friends to sign up as well so I can ring them for free!

Free 12 Month Contract Mobiles

Posted in Consumer Kicks, Telecommunication Hall at 11:37 am by admin

12 month free packages are a fairly new type of contract and as such are not properly understood by most consumers. 12 month free products are still the hidden secret of all of the products on the market today.

Without question the best priced way to buy a free line rental cell phone contract is over the net. As free line rental offers are a specialist promotion it is a good idea to make use of a mobile phone comparison site to see the most competitive offers at the time.

In reality a free line rental cell phone contract is not likely to cost a cent to operate. That assumes the consumer in question correctly makes a claim for cashback by redemption. This is rarely nearly as easy as retailers say it is because shops build in pre-requisites in the detail of free line rental contracts so as to limit the quantity of successful consumers.

A free line rental contract is a kind of one hundred perecent cashback by redemption contract. With a 12 month free deal you must remember to pay the phone bill as usual for the first few months before you are able to get your 100% refund. Further down the line in the contract you must to claim all expenses of the mobile phone back from the retailer which first sold you the mobile phone.

Putting aside the pitfalls of free line rental deals they are legitimate and customers can still obtain a 100% free cellular phone for 12 months.

12 month free is always a compromise, as they are only offered with older handset models. The biggest problem of free line rental packages is that if the shop fold you will be unable to get your cashback.
