A former computer games designer, Steve Jobs introduced the concept of computer portability in an age where computers had to be stacked inside stockrooms. However, his initial plan was to go soul-searching in India after his stint with Atari. Establishing a company that would become a worldwide phenomenon wasn’t on his list.

Born on February 24, 1955, Jobs is the adoptive son of Paul and Clara Jobs. His biological sister, Mona Simpson, is a famous novelist. After his backpacking trip to India, Jobs worked again for Atari with friend and future co-founder Steve Wozniak. This time though, he was tasked to create circuit boards for the game Breakout. Although Jobs was not familiar with circuit boards, he was able to impress Atari’s management through the help of Wozniak. Actually, it was Wozniak who did the job after Jobs offered to split the profit equally between them.

However, both men’s rise in the computer industry started at Job’s home garage. It was where the two assembled computers. Their first computer, which they both named Apple 1, was an instant success. The computer store The Byte Shop purchased 50 models. Although the Apple 1 was very crude, it was nevertheless the best model of a personal portable computer at the time. The earnings they made on Apple 1 were used to develop another computer model, Apple II.

Apple II was Job’s ticket in forming the Apple Company. At first several persons refused to lend him the money needed to create Apple II but Jobs eventually found a benefactor in Mike Markkula. Mike co-signed a bank loan with Jobs worth $250,000. With the money, the two Steve’s and Mike formed the Apple Computer Company on April 1, 1976.

Manager Training Requirements in Franchising Companies

Franchising companies must be very specific with regards to manager training and requirements for their franchised outlets. It is ultra-important to maintain consistency, quality and customer service in a franchising company. The name brand depends on it.

It is for this reason that I took the liberty of rewriting our franchise agreement and adding a clause to address this issue. Below you will find what I came up with in regards to manager training requirements in our company;

4.2.3 Manager Training

Franchisor requires that Franchisee submit to Franchisor their proposed manager training program prior to their sending a new manager or crew leader to this training program. If the proposed manager training program is not approved in its original form Franchisee must modify it and resubmit a new manager training proposal. This training is required of all managers, crew leaders and anyone who will be operating the car wash trucks/units unsupervised. Franchisee will bear all costs of the proposed manager training, including a reasonable training fee at the then current rates.

Franchisor may evaluate any managers or crew leaders that Franchisee sends to their training and determine for Franchisee if they are capable of operating a car wash truck in the Marketing Area following Franchisor’s standards, specifications and procedures as outlined in the Confidential Operations Manual.

Franchisor may allow a manager or crew leader who has failed their training program a chance to retake the course one additional time.

Sales is associated with knowledge and understanding of the value of a lead, understanding the “selling cycle”, a well documented sales process (and knowing how to use it), great qualifying questions, developing an atmosphere of trust with customers, listening more than talking, asking for the sale or the next step, great follow-up skills.

The actual skill sets (not personalities) for each of these areas of expertise is different. Most companies evaluate potential sales staff on personalities NOT skills. A critical component in the hiring process should include a skill based evaluation.

2)When recruiting, define well in advance what position you are hiring for - sales or marketing? Most companies’ need both as a team working together.

3)Eliminate untrained or unskilled staff from being involved in the recruitment process. The misconception about sales and marketing being one and the same runs rampant in all industries in all staff involved in the hiring process.

1)Develop a company profile to differentiate skill sets.

2)Create a list of key questions designed to delineate the difference in skill sets of the sales person vs. the marketing person.

One of the most important skills a doctor can posses, is that of a bed side manner. In the same sense, it is important that sales people posses the same type of skill, to be able to put their customer at ease.

Relaxing your customer is important to any type of sales situation you may find yourself in. Remember, think of the customer as a guest in your house, you are the host, so you want to make them as comfortable as possible in your house. The more comfortable they are in your house, the easier it will be for them to talk to you.

In sales, trying to persuade someone we have never met before to buy our product can be very challenging.

It can be challenging for a number of reasons, mainly the fear that consumers associate with sales people.

The fear that we are all alike, comparing us to the unfair stereotype of the used car salesman. They are afraid of being convinced to buy something they don’t need at a price they can’t afford.

You need to find a common denominator with your customer, something you can both relate to, something non-business.

A non-business conversation is a great way to break the ice with your customer. We all want to make a sale, but since when is it a crime to get to know your customer?

This is easier than you may think, people love to talk, especially about them selves.

So ask questions. Ask about their pets, their families, their work, and their hobbies.

When I was in banking, I managed a branch inside of a supermarket. Our daily goals consisted of going out into the aisles, approaching customers, and trying to convince them to bank with us.

We applied certain techniques to this type of sales that worked rather well.

For instance, the pet food aisle was a good place to talk to people, because people loved to talk about their pets. A simple question such as; “What kind of dog do you have?” would get them talking with the greatest of ease.

The junk food aisle was also a good place to talk to people. For some reason the presence of candy and junk food put people in a good mood, and they were more prone to talk with a stranger.

One place we stayed away from, was the frozen food section, because people didn’t want to talk where it was cold. Understandable.

My point is, people love to talk as long as they can relate to the subject manner, so don’t be afraid to ask questions, and get to know your customer beyond that of the products they need.

The more relaxed you can make your customer in your setting, the better off the two of you will be, and the more sales you will walk away with.
